Decide whether the laptop stays open
If you work from an external monitor, a vertical stand can reduce the laptop footprint dramatically. If the laptop screen remains part of your setup, use a raised stand instead.
Vertical storage saves the most surface area
A docked laptop stored on its edge occupies much less desktop width, which can be useful beside a monitor on a narrow desk.
Raised stands trade footprint for better screen placement
Fixed and adjustable stands still occupy desk space, but they can create usable room underneath and make the display easier to position.
Plan for keyboard and mouse space
When a laptop is raised substantially, an external keyboard and mouse are usually the more practical way to work. Include their footprint in your desk plan.
What we compare
We compare footprint, adjustability, portability, ventilation and whether each stand is better for an open or docked laptop workflow.
